Chemical process engineering focuses on the development of technologies that produce and transform materials and energy sources, including chemicals, fuels, and pharmaceuticals. An integrative discipline, chemical process engineering operates at the interface of chemistry, biology, physics, computer science, and mathematics, with the goal of scaling up processes from the laboratory to the industry. This is achieved through two complementary approaches:

• Quantitative modelling of (bio)chemical reactions, separation techniques, and energy and mass transfer.
• Design and construction of chemical and biotechnological plants.

Given the ubiquity and variety of chemical processes in the energy and materials sector, chemical process engineering is paramount to achieving a global energy transition to renewable sources and establishing a circular economy for a sustainable future.
